Specialist long life containers can be designed specifically for purpose and manufactured in the composite material, GRP.

This material (more commonly associated with boats) offers many benefits over conventional packaging materials and compliments the range that Macfarlane can offer.

What is GRP?

Strands of glass fibre matting is either woven or chopped and this sheet cloth material is combined with “plastic” resin, which through a catalytic reaction hardens to a solid structure. During the process the material can be moulded or formed as required.

How is it used?

Moulded containers are a common choice and are particularly suited where appearance is important and where sizes are not too large. These packs do require tooling but an option however, is to “layup” the fibreglass over a substrate. Macfarlane have the facilities to manufacture the frame of the case in a heavy duty corrugated board and laminate over it. This creates an extremely strong weight to strength ratio and dramatically reduces the need for tooling- an ideal solution for larger containers.

What are the benefits?

GRP packs have a wide range of benefits and offer a number of bespoke options including hermetic seals, security option, permanent colour choices, fire retardant options and re-usability. The packs also have high stacking strength and excellent physical and climatic protection.

What applications is it suitable for?

Storage, re-usable shipping, closed loop systems, all industries and Tri-services MoD.

Can the packaging be tested?

Macfarlane offer a wide range of testing options including tests for shock, vibration and climatic conditions.
