An international manufacturer of analytical and laboratory products

Customer

International manufacturer and supplier of advanced analytical and laboratory products.

Application

Shipment of customer-specific equipment for anatomical pathology. These high value products are extremely fragile and needed to be protected during air and sea freight. Additional delicate components are added by local distributors prior to onward shipment, so ease of access, unpacking and repacking was vital. ISPM 15 compliance was essential.

Solution

Macfarlane recommended a heat treated timber-framed plywood case, fitted with a 4-way pallet base. The interior features a foam-supported deck and shelf. Supplied in kit form, the pack is part of the manufacturing bill of materials, and starts its useful life in the production cell. Complete with pre-drilled holes and securing bolts, the crate is easy to pack, with shelf space for additional items provided by the local distributor.

The case has been designed and constructed for multi-trip use, and is fitted with timber handles for easy 2-man operation, even though the equipment weighs in at 110 Kg.

Results

This application underlines the advantages of considering transit packaging as an integral part of product manufacture. Careful study of the production environment, the shipping operation and the value added by the distributor network has resulted in a most effective shipping medium for vulnerable and expensive equipment.
