A leading manufacturer of aircraft

Customer

A leading manufacturer of braking systems for military, commercial and business aircraft.

Application

Carbon brake discs needed to be protected from impact damage during land, sea or air freight. The existing pack was a felt-lined plywood and corrugated board construction fitted with timber skids. The customer was looking for a compact and lightweight design to minimise shipping costs, and felt that the existing cases gave an antiquated and unprofessional appearance to what is a highly technical product.

However, shipment could be to any destination in the world, so the package needed to be proof against climatic extremes and all kinds of manual and mechanical handling conditions.

Solution

The design proposed by Macfarlane featured a composite wrap-around construction of heavy duty corrugated board and heat treated timber. Internally, a die-cut insert of polyethylene foam allows the discs to be located precisely and cushioned throughout the supply chain.

Results

Thanks to the superior protection offered to the brake pads, the customer is satisfied that these critical components arrive safely and ready for use, returning the aircraft to service without delay.

Thanks to the pack’s optimised size and weight, significant savings in shipping costs were also reported.
